A new meaning to inflation...

Having had a fearful experience with a compressed air hose, I'm pleased to say that all ended well for this New Zealand trucker!

Here we go again...

As the 21 May 2011 has been and gone, we've all realised that we're thankfully still here and no Judgment Day. However, thanks to Harold Camping, he's kindly provided the answer as to why the millions of dollars will not be wasted on his End of the World prediction campaign, the date is now to be 21 October 2011. I guess that's what's called a celestial typo error!

Judgment Day cartoon

I based this cartoon on a recent news report that come 21 May 2011, it's Judgment Day and bye-bye world! Well, just in case I'm not around to draw this tomorrow, I felt it was a good idea to post it today! Hmm, wonder what these guys are going to do come Monday morning after they've handed in their notice at work?

Seriously, a big thank you for looking in on the blog and hopefully enjoying the cartoons...and yes, more to come next week!

Bringing Rocket-Men from The Moon part 3 to a close, it's a great victory for The Tick...and yep, that is a tongue in a jar!

The Golden Age Tick #1 (Asia) pp3

Let's call him The Flinging Shield!

Well that's more or less how it started. The following tale of Tick related fun also looks at the subject of perception and reality. The reality bit began one evening when I received a phone call from my editor, Dave Snyder. Having enjoyed working on The Tick Color series, I was asked if I could produce pencils on a section of a new Tick book entitled, The Golden Age Tick. I of course said a firm yes. To add to the fun of this, I was equally asked to come up with a new character who would appear as a kind of British version of Captain America, his name was to be, The Flinging Shield! With British Bulldog logo and Union Jack shield, the only thing to add was a sidekick. Now unlike the famous Captain America who happen to have a shield that would return to him once thrown, this shield, well...didn't! It's surprising just how many sidekicks you lose having thrown your shield into the sea, minefields, etc. Hence the number shown on the chest logo of Retrieve. (Cool name, eh?) So that was it, that's how on that fateful night, The Flinging Shield was born. I seem to recall the conversation only took ten minutes. Okay now for the perception bit. Some weeks after the book was published, I happened to come across an interesting Tick fan website that kindly made mention of the one and only, The Flinging Shield, but this origin was somewhat different. I discovered a great deal of copy explaining the deep psychological background to the character and all the various things he represented, which clearly the creators must have had in mind when producing him. To be honest, I was deeply impressed with all this, that a fan was able to see so much in the hero. so whilst the reality was simply a ten minute chat with one of the great guys at New England Comics, I'm really pleased that the perception provided a lot of fun and pleasure to the reader. A big heartfelt thank you.

Introducing:The Tick page 19

I always felt that Introducing:The Tick was a good piece of work to get involved in. Based on a kind of This Is Your Life Tv show, it provided a great jumping on point for new readers, I always loved the loyal superhero team (bottom panel), with such characters as Caped Cod and Crazy Blue Rocket, you couldn't help but have a good time!

The Tick Color 6 page 11

The Tick Color series was great in that it allowed you to draw a variety of characters from The Tick universe, both heroes and villains. But when it came to the bad guys, none provided more smiles like Chairface Chippendale.

Pseudo-Tick #13 page 9

Ever since Ben Edlund created and introduced The Tick to the world of comicdom back in 1988, via New England Comics, Boston, Massachusetts, I've always loved the wonderful insane nature of the character. Having had the pleasure of working on 11 Tick books, I was really pleased to get the chance to start with drawing Pseudo-Tick #13, not to mention fun villains such as Multiple Santa.

Do-Do Man the series #1

Following Do-Do Man's creation back in 1993, by both partner, Sarah Sier and myself, we were pleased with readership reaction to the limited edition. This resulted in a further four books sharing the misadventures of The Psychotic Protagonist and his cat, Amy. With a proposed graphic novel on the cards, this covering all five published issues, plus artwork from an as of yet unseen published story, including feature pages, it had come to my attention that for a number of people kind enough to look in on the blog, it might be their first time in enjoying the Do-Do Man comics. Therefore, in all it's glory, following this post will be the story and artwork from issue #1. At a later stage, artwork from the other issues will be shown.
